Meet the Team
Rabbi Shaul Engelsberg, Principal, holds Semicha from Kollel Avodas Levi of Ner Israel Rabbinical College, a certificate from Torah Umesorah for The Principals Fellowship, and a Masters in Education from John Hopkins University. He started his teaching career in Seattle in 1994 at the Seattle Hebrew Academy and at the Northwest Yeshiva High School. For the past fifteen years, he has been a teacher in Detroit at Yeshiva Bais Yehudah and Bais Yaakov High School. Rabbi Engelsberg is excited to be leading Derech Emunah and inspiring each student to realize her own unique potential.
Mrs. Aliza Genauer, Judaic Studies, is teaching Jewish History, Mishlei and Parsha. She grew up in Teaneck, NJ, where she attended Bruriah High School, then graduated with a BS from Stern College for Women. Mrs. Genauer and her husband, who have 3 children, have worked behind the scenes of education for many years, and she is pleased to now be in the classroom, working directly with students.
Mrs. Miriam Chait, Judaic Studies, is teaching Chumash and Yedios Klalios. She was born and raised in Queens, NY, and attended Yavne Teachers’ College in Cleveland, OH after High School. Mrs. Chait graduated from Maalot Jerusalem with a BA in Computer Science and later earned an MA in Special Education from Daemen College. After teaching in New York for six years, Mrs. Chait moved with her husband and three children to Seattle and enjoys homemaking, teaching, music, and nature.
Rabbi Yehudah Bresler, Judaic Studies, is teaching Halacha, Jewish Law. Rabbi Bresler has been sharing his love and knowledge of Judaism with the Seattle Kollel since 2008. At the Kollel, Rabbi Bresler has focused on youth and young adult events and learning experiences. He is excited to share his unique insight into the spirit and message of each detail of Jewish law with the students of Derech Emunah.
Mrs. Jessica Hoffman, General Studies, is teaching Humanities, which includes English Lit, Writing/Editing, Social Studies, and Public Speaking. She grew up in Seattle, WA, then earned a BA in English Literature from Stern College for Women. Mrs. Hoffman worked in NY as a book editor, and has been an informal teen educator for the past 9 years. She loves to read, CrossFit, and work with teenagers.
Mrs. Joy Maimon, Civics and Government teacher. Joy has a B.A. from the University of Washington in Jewish Studies and has studied with Hebrew College. In the past she has worked as a regional coordinator for the Nesiya Institute. She is active as a volunteer in several communal organizations. Joy is excited to be learning together with the inquisitive and engaged students at Derech Emunah.
Mrs. Yael Schapira teaches Algebra I and Geometry She was born and raised in Santiago, Chile, where she earned her bachelor degree in Architecture from Mayor University. Before moving to Seattle in 2014 Mrs. Schapira taught Judaic studies and art at the Maimonides School in Santiago. Mrs. Schapira loves to spend time with her family, take long walks in the neighborhood parks and to teach.
Mr. Stephen Fast joins Derech Emunah to teach a once a week class on financial responsibility based on a curriculum developed specifically for high school girls by Mesila. Mr. Fast has a BA in Mathematics from Swarthmore College and an MBA in Finance from the Wharton School of Business. He has worked in a variety of positions in the financial world for over 3 decades, most recently as a financial advisor with the firm of Waddell & Reed.
Alex Daves is teaching Circus Arts. Alex grew up as a gymnast and studied Psychology and Dance at Oberlin College before going to Circus School in Australia at the National Institute of Circus Arts in Melbourne. She then became a coach and performer at the School for Acrobatics and New Circus Arts (SANCA), specializing in teaching children and the art of handstands. In 2013, she took a break from the circus to get her Master’s in Social Work from Boston College and now is back in Seattle teaching Circus Arts and working as a therapist at SANCA. Alex is excited to be able to provide Derech Emunah with the wonderful Art of Circus!
Mark Takamichi Miller is teaching art at Derech Emunah. Mark is an established professional artist whose solo shows in New York’s Chelsea galleries and Los Angeles’ Chinatown district merit reviews in the New York Times, Art in America and numerous metropolitan publications. Prior to founding the Miller School of Art, he taught for over 25 years at universities throughout the country, including the University of Washington, Cornish College of the Arts, and the University of Oregon.
Jenny Assouline is a certified Stott Pilates instructor. She has been teaching Pilates for close to 10 years and is the owner of a Pilates Studio in Seward Park. Jenny enjoys teaching women and girls of all ages. She is especially passionate about teaching preteens and teens the importance of exercise and the benefits exercise provides in keeping healthy, happy and energized. Jenny is therefore especially thrilled to have the opportunity to teach the students of Derech Emunah.
